A virtual instrument tracing the transformation of metal instruments in Colombia, with metal percussion, valved brass, a pipe organ and nature ambiences.

Oro is the second instalment in Mntra’s location-based Portals series, created in Bogotá, home to half of the team, as a reinterpretation of the legend of El Dorado and of what precious metals mean in Colombia. Many metal instruments arrived through the Caribbean, were transformed and became ubiquitous across genres such as Chirimía, Porro, Fandango and Salsa. Oro combines metal percussion, modern valved brass and an architecturally acclaimed pipe organ with analogue and digitally processed versions of these samples and immersive nature ambiences, all played by local artists who perform music styles from around the country. The MNDALA 2 engine transforms this material further, while the animated Perform View artwork shows what is truly precious in this land: woven textiles, bright colours, water and syncretism.
