Mntra Naada - Download

A contemporary virtual instrument rooted in millennia-old practices and instruments from both the north and south of India.

Naada, the Sanskrit term for sound or tone, was created under the guidance of violinist Sangeeta Shankar, teacher of Mntra founder Brian D’Oliveira: in Chennai, Mntra recorded some of India’s finest musicians on the nadaswaram, sarangi and sarod, then added male and female tanpuras, a shruti box and the kanjira and pakhawaj. Over 40 presets harness the 22 shruti system, which, informed by the research of Dr. Vidyadhar Oke, gives precise access to the intonation of each note in a raga. Unique to Naada is the Anahata, a one-of-a-kind Indian cello built with luthier Alexandre Letellier, with five playing strings and 23 sympathetic strings, whose round robins and sample start modulation change spatial position and expression on every note. Field recordings from South India and Auroville, plus sources re-amped through modular outboard gear and guitar pedals, make Naada suitable for many genres and rhythms.
