Two very special stringed instruments: a cello strung with hemp twine and played as a stand-up bass, and a traditional fretless Kenyan bolon.

Played in various tunings, the cello sounds deeply sonorous, with rich, warm resonance, powerful low end and a woody, soft quality, while the bolon has a cow horn neck, a gourd body, four twine strings and a goat-skin resonating head that the strings pass directly through. The strings were sampled with 10x round robin and up to 14 velocity layers, along with legato slides, string mutes, tuning peg plucks and twists, finger taps, brushes and percussive effects on the body. 30 ambience patches with pads, drones and soundscapes plus 20 FX presets open up further tonal directions.
