Steel Tones captures the sound of a Hapi Drum – a steel tongue drum by Hapi Tones with 8 tongues tuned to a D major pentatonic scale – as a multi-sampled Kontakt instrument.

Each note has a strong fundamental wrapped in complex overtones and a long, mellow sustain. Played with soft rubber and hard metal mallets, the drum was recorded dry and present with a close stereo pair of Neumann microphones and with a second pair at a distance in a hall; two layers with independent controls can be freely combined and played chromatically. Fifty sound-designed ambiences, pads and atmospheres, a waveform pad with vibrato, an arpeggiator with step sequencer and an FX rack with convolution reverb make it a versatile tool for accompaniment and underscoring.
