Principessa captures the sound of the rare “Princess” organ – a two-manual electric organ made by Italian manufacturer Welson in the late 1960s or early 1970s.

The organ sounds like a rich analogue synthesizer with creamy lows and mids and soft, rolled-off highs; its two keyboards have 43 keys each, joined by bass pedals, an expression pedal and a built-in rotating speaker for vibrato effects. It was recorded dry in the studio with a pair of Neumann TLM 103 microphones, capturing sustain and staccato samples of every key for the stock voices from Synth Flute and Bass Clarinet to Harpsichord, Piano and Vibraphone. Controls for swell, attack, release, vibrato and octave layering, a glide slider for monophonic legato, LFO, 13 filters, an arpeggiator and an effects rack with convolution reverb offering 119 impulses shape the sound further.
