Rumba Box is a name used in the English-speaking Caribbean for the bass kalimba, which the player sits on while plucking the tines; on Bart Hopkin’s instrument some tines have been reshaped to tune the most prominent overtone, and some carry rattles that give the tone a distinctive edge. The second instrument, Arby McCone, combines a rumba box and a cajón with extra sound-makers such as spring-mounted metallic sounds, clave sounds, shekere-type beads, shakers, rattletines and bells. Plucks, picks, mallets, taps, knocks, slaps and auxiliary percussion were sampled with two stereo mic positions and are joined by 20 effect presets plus sound-designed textures, pads and drones.
