The sounds of the Solton Disco 64, an analogue synthesizer and drum machine built between 1978 and 1982 – early Italo disco in a box.

The Disco 64 was manufactured in Germany between 1978 and 1982 in partnership with Ketron. Two SSM2040 filters, as used in early iterations of the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5, give it a recognisably fat analogue tone; it also has 36 keys on a removable keyboard plus knobs and buttons to trigger the drum machine. Soundiron recorded synth sustains and staccatos, percussion one-shots and drum loops at several tempos in a dry studio through a pair of Neumann TLM 103 microphones and direct line in, and hand-crafted 20 atmospheric pads from the source – for warm, funky grooves and radical synths.
