The octobass, the deepest concert string instrument with a thunderous, room-shaking growl, as a Kontakt instrument with over 30 articulations and more than 12 GB of content.

The first octobass was built in 1849 by Jean Baptiste Vuillaume; in 1996 double bassist Nicola Moneta, luthier Pierre Bohr and bow-maker Piero Cavalazzi constructed the first modern one, a 3.48-metre mammoth played from a raised platform using mechanical levers and still one of only a handful in existence. Soundiron recorded it with Giorgio Riolo and Daniele Bertinelli at Moneta’s private gallery in Milan, using a close pair of large-diaphragm mics at the F holes for a dry, intimate sound and a wide-spaced pair of omnis at 2 metres for a vivid chamber quality. The master presets offer sustains from p to F, tremolo, sforzando, swell, flautando and true legato, shorts such as staccato, spiccato, pizzicato, col legno and Bartók pizzicato with 4 round robins, expressions and effects, while the phrase presets provide hundreds of aleatoric phrases organised by root key.
