Made from aged apricot wood, the duduk is among the oldest double-reed woodwinds; it sounds similar to an English horn, and its unusually wide reed gives it a robust, haunting tone reminiscent of a wailing voice. Film scores such as Gladiator, Avatar, Blood Diamond, Dune and Hotel Rwanda have made it popular far beyond its Armenian roots.
