Two experimental string instruments by inventor Bart Hopkin, with small weights on the strings that alter the overtones and create unusual, beautiful sounds.

The Weighted Lyre and Weighted Zither are handcrafted creations of wood and metal with a bright acoustic character, in which small weights on the strings alter the overtone relationships. The lyre has 17 main strings plus three additional strings running over a narrow neck that can be fretted, with weights placed to bring out an octave overtone, whereas the weights on the zither’s 34 chromatically tuned strings follow no pattern, giving each string its own highly inharmonic tone. Soundiron sampled plucks, glisses, harmonics and effects with three stereo microphone positions, close, room and contact, complemented by FX presets and 20 ambient pads and drones designed from the source recordings.
