A board zither whose 16 strings always sound together, with notes selected by spring-mounted steel bars, for an unusually organic and full tone.

Alt Alt has 16 closely spaced strings, 12 tuned to the same pitch and 4 an octave higher, which always sound together to form a single grand composite tone. Notes are chosen by 36 spring-mounted steel bars above the strings, arranged chromatically, which change the effective string length when pressed; similar keying mechanisms appear in the akkordia, bulbul tarang, taishogoto, nyckelharpa and hurdy-gurdy. Slow strums, fast strums and hammered-down bars were recorded with up to 8 round robins and 6 velocity layers, using close mics and pickups. Slightly imperfect tuning creates a rich chorusing effect and an organic, full sound.
