A hand-made cello by Dust Bowl Guitars with an empty artillery shell as its body, producing an eerie, shimmering metallic resonance.

On the Artillery Shell Cello, a standard cello tailpiece and bridge are mounted directly on an empty artillery shell whose open top lets the sound resonate out, while a curved metal rod carries the fingerboard and is topped by a combat helmet with a contact pickup. It was recorded with large-diaphragm condenser microphones and the pickup, which you can blend in the mixer. The instrument offers fingered and glissando true legato, sustains, trills, expressions such as crescendos, sforzandos and swells and short articulations from staccato and spiccato to pizzicato, Bartók snaps and col legno with up to 8 round robins. Over 380 live phrases in every key can be arranged into your own sequences with the sequencer in the Phrases preset.
