Place the plug-in in the first slot of the DAW track armed for recording and adjust the preamp gain on your audio interface accordingly, because the level should be right at the source. This avoids noise from boosting quiet recordings later as well as digital clipping, and the real-time feedback also catches subtle distortion that DAW meters may not show. A balanced level ensures that subsequent plug-ins and their presets respond as intended and that headroom and dynamics are retained.
